Black Lanthanated Tungsten Electrodes

Black lanthanated tungsten electrodes contain 1% lanthanum oxide and are identified by their black tip. They are a highly versatile TIG welding electrode, widely used as a safer, non-radioactive alternative to traditional thoriated (red) electrodes.

These electrodes provide excellent arc starting and re-ignition characteristics, outstanding arc stability, and a low burn-off rate. Their ability to perform effectively on both AC and DC current makes them suitable for a wide range of welding applications.

Key Characteristics

Colour Code: Black tip (1% Lanthanum)

Current Compatibility: Performs exceptionally well on both AC and DC welding currents. Ideal for welding aluminium and magnesium alloys on AC, and carbon steel, stainless steel, titanium, and nickel alloys on DC.

Arc Stability: Delivers reliable arc starting and re-ignition at low amperages, helping to reduce arc wandering and improve weld quality.

Long Service Life: Maintains a sharp point for extended periods and offers an exceptionally low burn-off rate, resulting in improved electrode life and reduced downtime.

Direct Replacement for Thoriated Electrodes: Often used as a direct substitute for 2% thoriated (red) tungsten electrodes without requiring changes to welding parameters or procedures.

Black lanthanated tungsten electrodes are an excellent all-purpose choice for welders seeking consistent performance, versatility, and a safer alternative to radioactive electrode types.
